Uploaded | My name is Sam. I’m thirteen years old. I decided to leave my home to live in the wilderness.
Uploaded | I find a weasel. I call him The Baron. I watch him play.
Uploaded | I cooked some sticks over the fire and used the left-over water to make salt. It could make my food taste better and last longer.
Uploaded | One morning I heard shots in the woods. I climbed a tree and saw hunters. The hunters did not find the deer they had killed.
Uploaded | I hid the deer and went back later. The deer meat helps me survive. I use the deer fur to make a door to my house in the tree.
Uploaded | My city clothes are ripped and torn. I use the deer fur to make new clothes.
Uploaded | I hear sirens. Maybe it’s a police car? Then I see a man by my tree. Who is he? Are the police looking for him?
Uploaded | I make him a fire. I offer him some food. I don’t know his name, but I call him Bando. He seems nice.
Uploaded | I find out he is an English teacher. He got lost hiking in the woods. He stays here for a few days.
Uploaded | He showed me how to make jars out of mud. Now I can save jam I make from berries. I missed Bando when he left.
Uploaded | It is Fall in the woods. I miss Bando. Frightful, my bird, and my animal friends are my only company now.
Uploaded | It’s Halloween. I am going to have a party for my animal friends. I leave food out for them. Who will come to my party?
Uploaded | The animals didn't eat the food I left outside for them. But they came in my tree and got into my stored food!
Uploaded | What a mess they make! I get sprayed by a skunk and raccoons take away some of my food! Yikes, I stink!
Uploaded | Frightful got very upset about all the animals making a mess and running around in our camp.
Uploaded | What did I learn? I do not feed the animals anymore!
Uploaded | But I do find another deer. I use the skin to make a jacket and a blanket.
Uploaded | I forgot to save wood for winter. I start chopping wood. I need a big pile of wood for fires to keep warm. It will be cold.
Uploaded | And the big snowstorm hit. This is where I started telling this story.
Uploaded | Frightful and I get use to living in the snow. It is almost Christmas now.
Uploaded | Guess who comes back? My friend Bando comes back on Christmas Eve. He likes all the new things I have made.
Uploaded | Bando shows me stories from the newspaper. People have been writing about the wild boy on the mountain. That’s me!
Uploaded | Who do I hear? I hear my dad! He has come to my mountain. He has come for Christmas.
Uploaded | Bando leaves. Dad stays another week. Before he leaves, Dad tells me I am doing a good job. I’ll miss him. |
