Uploaded My name is Sam. I’m thirteen years old. I decided to leave my home to live in the wilderness.
Uploaded I came up here to the woods last summer. My home is in a big tree. I burned a hole in this tree and made it my home.
Uploaded I made a tiny fireplace inside the tree so I could be warm in winter. I have a bed here too. I live here.
Uploaded There are no grocery stores here. I hunt for food on the mountain. I find nuts and berries to eat.
Uploaded Sometimes I catch fish. Sometimes I catch rabbits or find deer that hunters have left. I live off of the land.
Uploaded I watch animals nearby. I see squirrels, raccoons, and birds. I like to find them. They are like friends.
Uploaded This is Frightful. He is a special bird called a falcon. I trained him to come when I hold my arm out.
Uploaded Now it is winter. I am warm in my tree, but it is very cold outside. I only go out when I hunt for food.
Uploaded I use to live in the city. I lived in an apartment with my parents and eight brothers and sisters. It was crowded!
Uploaded My dad told me about my great grandpa Gribley. He lived a long time ago on a farm in the woods on a mountain.
Uploaded The woods where he lived still belongs to my family. Dad said there is a tree with our name carved in it there.
Uploaded No place for a Gribley, said my dad. But I found that tree and I live on that mountain now. I hunt food on that land.
Uploaded When I left the city I had $40.00. I had an ax, a ball of string, and a small knife. I bought supplies so I could make a fire.
Uploaded I used little sticks to make fishing hooks. That way I could catch fish to eat. I make a fire and cook it.
Uploaded I went to the library in town. The librarian helped me find maps. That’s how I found great grandfather Gribley’s land.
Uploaded I read books about nature. I learned about plants that I could eat. I found apple trees. I found things I could eat.
Uploaded I found mussels in the stream. I dug them out of the mud, opened their shell, and ate them.
Uploaded My home in the tree is in a perfect place. It is next to a stream. I can find food and drink water here. I make my home here.
Uploaded It’s fun to watch raccoons play. One day one of them stopped. He looked around like he heard something. Who is it?
Uploaded And I saw her. An old lady was picking berries. She was picking my berries in my woods!
Uploaded I couldn’t let her know that I live in the woods. I picked berries with her and walked her back down the mountain to town.
