You may click on photo credits link in any book to link to the pages on Flickr for the photos. Of course, the pictures remain the property of photographers who took them and all the restrictions they placed on their use still apply.

Bushfires

 Flickr Bushfires happen every year in Australia.
 Flickr Bushfires happen in country areas. Sometimes they start in forests. Sometimes they start in grass.
 Flickr In 2019 and 2020 there have been bad bushfires. The bushfires have been in every state.
 Flickr In the years before the bushfires there was very little rain. This is called a drought.
 Flickr In late 2019 there were also very high temperatures. It was the hottest summer on record.
 Flickr The country was hot and dry. This made it easy to burn.
 Flickr Lots of fires started in December 2019. Some fires were started by lightning. Other fires were started by people or by accidents.
 Flickr Hot, dry winds made the fires spread.
 Flickr The firefighters came to fight the bushfires. They wanted to stop them. But the bushfires were very hot and fast.
 Flickr In early January, more fires started. The land was still dry and hot, and these fires were also very hard to fight.
 Flickr The bushfires spread over lots of places. Sometimes they burned through houses. People lost everything in their house as well.
 Flickr Some people died in the bushfires. Some firefighters died, trying to stop the fires.
 Flickr Lots of animals also died in the fires. Others were badly injured.
 Flickr Some animals are still alive, but they have lost their homes, their food and their water.
 Flickr The fires have burned for over a month. They destroyed lots of forests, animals, land and farms.
 Flickr People are worried about how much more damage might happen before summer ends.
 Flickr Lots of people think the bushfires will get worse in the future because of global warming.
