The Scarlet Letter

 Flickr The Scarlet Letter takes place in the puritan colony of Boston in the 1600s.
 Flickr Hester Prynne is the main character. She believes her husband is lost at sea on his way to the colony.
 Flickr Hester secretly falls in love with Reverend Dimmesdale.
 Flickr She has a baby, Pearl.
 Flickr The town scorns her for having a child out of wedlock.
 Flickr They force her to wear a scarlet A, for "adulterer" for the rest of her life.
 Flickr Hester lives with Pearl far from town in the woods.
 Flickr Reverend Dimmesdale is eaten up by guilt over their secret. The guilt makes him ill and he confesses to the town.
 Flickr Reverend Dimmesdale dies of his illness brought on by guilt, while Hester and Pearl travel home to Europe.
