 Flickr Amy goes to Europe with the girls' Aunt so she can see the world.
 Flickr Beth is an accomplished piano player. She gets scarlet fever and is never quite the same. She dies later in the story.
 Flickr Meg marries John Brooke, a hard working teacher, and has twins.
 Flickr Josephine, or Jo, writes stories, and even has a novel published.
 Flickr She meets a professor in New York and falls in love.
 Flickr She inherits Plumfield, her Aunt's old house, and the two start a school there.
 Flickr Each of the sisters overcomes personal challenges. Each sister represents a different role for women in society.
