Flickr "The Gift of the Magi" adapted from O. Henry
Flickr Della saved a long time. She had only $1.87.
Flickr It was not enough for Christmas shopping.
 Flickr She sobbed and sniffled.
Flickr Della was married to Jim. They were very much in love.
Flickr Jim had a job. He earned only $20 a week.
Flickr Della was sad. She did not have enough money to buy a gift for Jim.
Flickr Della passed a mirror and looked carefully into it.
Flickr Jim and Della did not own much, but they were proud of two things...
Flickr Della was proud of her long, beautiful hair.
Flickr Jim was proud of his gold watch. It had been his father's.
Flickr As she looked in the mirror, Della had an idea for getting more money.
Flickr Della sold her hair to Madame Sofronie at a wig shop.
 Flickr She received 20 dollars.
Flickr She paid $21 for a watch chain for Jim's present. She had 87 cents left.
Flickr Della curled her short hair when she got home.
Flickr She worried that Jim would not like her short hair.
Flickr When he got home, Jim could not stop staring at her.
Flickr "My hair is sold and gone. I'm me without it, ain't I?" said Della.
Flickr "Nothing could make me like you any less," said Jim.
Flickr Jim gave Della the Christmas present he had bought her.
Flickr Stella opened it and again began crying.
Flickr The package contained combs for her hair. Her vanished hair.
Flickr Soon she smiled, "My hair grows so fast, Jim!"
Flickr Della then showed Jim his present. The watch chain.
Flickr Jim sat down and smiled.
Flickr "I sold my watch to get the money to buy your combs."
Flickr The magi were wise men who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger.
Flickr They invented Christmas gift giving.
Flickr Jim and Della sacrificed what they liked most to buy gifts for each other.
Flickr Anyone who does what Jim and Della did is wise.
Flickr But Jim and Della are the wisest. They are the magi.
