Writing Books getting the level right

I want  to right some books that have simple words for my young adults with learning disabilities. . Is there a graded word  list  I should use to make sure I'm doing this right e.g should I be using the first 100 dolch words ?

The Dolch list isn't a bad place to go, but there are some other lists that have been updated over time.  I found two lists posted by a school system that resemble the copyrighted, published lists I can't send your way. The schools have divided them by grade level (1st & 2nd grade), but they'll give you a good place to start in your efforts. The link is
