Hi everyone,

I teach English as a Second Language at the high school level. I have a 16 year old student who has recently completed a special education assessment and was found to have a kindergarten reading level. He can identify letters by name but has no connection between sounds and letters. The assessment tests were done in Spanish (his native language) so his status as an ESL student could not explain the test results.

For the rest of this academic year, he will remain in my class. It was suggested that I find websites to help him with literacy development and have him work on those during class.

Does anyone have any suggestions for Tar Heel Reader books to use with him? Books in English would be great but Spanish books would be great too. It'd be better for him to develop literacy skills in Spanish and later transfer those skills to English. There are so many books on here that I'm feeling overwhelmed in my efforts to find something interesting and appropriate for him. So I thought I'd ask for suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

When you add that for New Hampshire (or any state), can you begin the entire string with the state abbreviation? In this case, it would be NH:S:PS4:11:3.4

Then, when folks in Florida add tags referring to the Sunshine State Standards they'd write FL:LA.4.1.6.5 when referring to the Language Arts standard (LA) at the 4th grade level (4) in the Reading Process strand (1) and the standard (6.5) which is "The student will relate new vocabulary to familiar words."

Thanks for getting this started NH!

This is exciting news for teachers in NH! There are a few of us that will be going through and tagging books already in your collection-- and we will be using the NH GLE/GSE codes exactly as found in the NH Curriculum Frameworks. For example, the 3rd strand under the Physical Science domain (motion of an object is affected by force), 2nd stem (motion), 1st indicator at grade span 9-11 (Interpret and apply the laws of motion to determine the effects of forces on the motion of objects) will be listed as: S:PS4:11:3.4

Thanks for the great resource!

As you add tags to your books, consider adding tags that relate to the state standards in your state. Let's use a standard approach. Perhaps use the state abbreviation followed by the grade level and finally, in parentheses, include the alpha-numeric code that relates to the standard you think relates to your book. For example, when referencing a standard from the 3rd grade Language Arts Standard Course of Study for standard 2.11 in NC, I might add a tag like: NC3(LA2.11). When referencing a standard from the First grade Sunshine State Standards (FL) for Language Arts, I might have a tag like: FL1(LA 1.1.1.1). What do you think?
