Intellikeys Access
Three different custom overlays have been created using Overlay Maker software. In order to make these overlays work, the overlay file must be manually sent to the IntelliKeys using special software. To do this, there are 3 options.
- Overlay Maker Software. The custom overlays were created using this program. This will allow you to edit, print and send the overlays. Overlay Maker can be purchased from IntelliTools (~$140). Available for Mac and Windows. If you do NOT have Overlay Maker, go to the next option.
- Overlay Printer and Overlay Sender. Overlay Printer and Overlay Sender are free utility programs for those who do not have Overlay Maker. Overlay Printer allows you to print the overlay. Overlay Sender allows you to send the overlay to the IntelliKeys. These 2 utility programs do not allow you to create or modify the overlays. Both of these programs can be downloaded from www.intellitools.com. Overlay Printer and Overlay Sender can also be found on installation CDs for IntelliTools products or on many 3rd party CDs that have activities made with IntelliTools software. These utilities are available for Mac and Windows.
- Overlay Maker 3 Trial. This 45-day trial is a full version of Overlay Maker that allows you to make and modify overlays. It can be downloaded from www.intellitools.com. After 45 days, this program does not allow you to make and modify overlays, instead it simply allows you to print and send overlays. It is available for Mac and Windows.

Here are the 3 custom overlays that have been made for Tar Heel Reader. Each one has been designed to meet the needs of students with a variety of sensory and motor needs. The switch settings accompanying each overlay have been programmed with right arrow and left arrow keys for modified 2-switch scanning (see the Switch Access section for more details).
